why we were born

“WE TRAVEL TO CHANGE,

NOT OF PLACE,

BUT IDEAS.”

— HIPPOLYTE TAINE

A THIRST FOR
LIFE-CHANGING ADVENTURES

We longed for travels, not holidays. For expeditions, not cruises. For adventures that would look nothing like what we had lived the year before or that we may live the year after. And of course, we wanted to explore and see our world in a way that preserves and nurtures our ecosystems.

So we set out to invent something truly different, where travellers would feel part of the crew, where we would discover the furthermost parts of the world, in a more conscious and virtuous way.

THE MISSION

OF A LIFETIME

Our sustainable native company has set an ambitious mission : to invent a sustainable model of cruising, whose leadership will inspire many others.

It’s a significant challenge, but we believe that the greatest innovations stem from it.

who we are

We are Sophie, Julia & Quentin, a tight-knit crew of adventurers and entrepreneurs, surrounded by a team of passionate experts - architects, designers, engineers, builders, polar explorers and expedition leaders. Together we've set out to challenge the norms of cruising by offering a new way to explore the most remote corners of our planet, leaving no trace behind.

Bound by heart and courage, we embarked on the adventure of becoming a new-generation shipowner.

“The North Pole makes you feel alive. The singular smell of the sea, the purity of an iceberg, the eyes of a polar bear, the thrill of exploration.

Sailing in the Arctic for over 10 years gave me extraordinary emotions. But it became unbearable for me to continue piloting polluting vessels. I decided to dedicate my expertise to this titanic challenge: transforming the cruise industry to preserve the remote regions I love so much.

Paradoxically, our future solution draws inspiration from our pioneering ancestors who explored the world by sail. Leveraging advanced technology, we harness natural resources like sun, water, and wood. Selar strikes a balance between technology, innovation, and exploration."

— Sophie Galvagnon, Selar’s CEO

A VESSEL POWERED BY WIND AND SUN

This new breed of close-to-zero-emission sailing vessel has been specially designed to adapt to the extreme conditions of the poles.

The "Captain Arctic" will use the sun and wind to navigate its expeditions, with 5 solid sails covered in 20,000 square feet of solar panels. The solar sailingship will cruise without any noise, vibration or smell and will save 90% CO2 compared to most cruise ships of the region.

BEYOND TOURISM

In every aspect of our expeditions, we dedicate time and resources for our vessel to be trully useful. Our year-round presence in the Arctic enables us to create long-term partnerships and actions with local institutes.

REGENERATE LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS
  • Waste removal program : starting in 2027, our solar sailing ship will be the first in the region equipped to collect plastic waste. For this mission we're associated with “Clean Up Svalbard” to remove 5 tonnes of plastic minimum from the shores of Svalbard per year.
SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
  • Our 8m2 science lab onboard could accommodate scientists from Ny-Alesund's research institutes, who can benefit in particular from our travels to areas not yet carthographed.
  • We are also a designated ship of opportunity for IPEV, meaning we'll provide logistical support to remote scientific bases, delivering supplies in a low-carbon manner, free of charge.
ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES
  • Some expeditions will host an artist in residence. It is a way to fuel artistic exploration by providing an unparalleled canvas for creativity, whilst enriching travellers’ experiences with unique and exploratory perspectives on the Arctic that foster stimulating conversations.

A COMMUNITY OF
ADVENTURERS

Driven by our passion for authentic adventure and a commitment to sustainability, we seek to build a vibrant community of like-minded travellers with inspiring explorers.

As unique as our itineraries, some of our expeditions will be designed and led by our ambassadors. Go beyond your limits with these unforgettable travel companions passing on their passion and knowledge.

Expeditions coming soon.

Arthur Guerin
Free diver world champion & creative mind

Arthur Guérin-Boëri is a professional freediver specializing in dynamic apnea, of which he is a five-time world champion. His quest for performance has led him to push back the limits of his own body, notably by setting a double world record for freediving under ice: covering 120 meters with a wetsuit, then 105 meters without a wetsuit in water at 0.7°C. Today, he is the most successful freediver in the history of the sport.
Driven by adventure and discovery, Arthur seeks to connect deeply with nature and its power. He now aspires to explore the oceans, meet those who live with and thanks to them, and share his passion for freediving.

Among his most extreme expeditions, Loury has crossed the Amazon rainforest, set a world record for crossing the Vatnajokull, Europe's second largest glacier, and crossed the North-West Passage in a ski kite, the Arctic Mission. 77 days on the pack ice, braving wolves, bears, extreme winds and storms. For him, confronting nature is a way to feel alive and to build himself as a man and as a father. For those with a passion for travel and adventure, he is a source of inspiration and discovery.

Caroline Côté is an adventure filmmaker and long-distance athlete. One of her most recent expeditions was Polar Shadows, in which she and polar explorer Vincent Colliard crossed the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Circle in winter polar night for 63 days in complete autonomy. Since 2023, she has held the women's world record for the fastest crossing of 1130 km from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole. Filming in natural, remote locations with complex environmental features is her passion and her specialty.

Jérémie Villet
Poetic photographer & polar solitaire adventurer

Jérémie Villet believes that somewhere on Earth, our imagination becomes reality.

He left his studies to travel alone with his equipment and small sled. During his long, solitary expeditions to remote places, Jérémie uses snow the way a painter uses blank paper to reveal nature’s purity.

Every year, when the first snow falls alongside the last autumn leaves, the white landscapes create a perfect setting. The snow erases the superfluous, sweeps away excess, and highlights the essential. Far from the rest of the world, this pristine scene remains his childhood garden, and photography, his inalienable right to dream.

Jérémie Villet’s photographs are untouched and have received numerous international awards, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year and European Photographer of the Year.

His work can be discovered in his printed book titled Première Neige, as well as in various documentaries such as Yukon, A White Dream, directed by Mathieu le Lay and broadcast on Arte.

Polar obsessed photographer & bear lover

Known for his intimate and aesthetically dramatic compositions, Ledoux's distinctive fine art photography is born out of his passion for the preservation of nature, specifically of the Arctic.

A large part of his work is based on aerial images, thus, he aspires to bring a new perspective on the fauna we already know through traditional photography. He is convinced that these images provide us with a new approach to observe and document wildlife behaviour from a fresh angle, revealing animals in their entirety and in the context of a larger habitat and landscape in a way that has never been possible in the past.

He has a strong belief that photography is a powerful tool able to create meaningful images that inspire emotionally as well as to create a logical connection to an issue, and in that way enhancing our human understanding of the challenges we are facing together.
